The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
